Chapter 6 - The Stray Bullet

Julian lunged across the concrete floor with the desperate speed of a cornered animal.
Before anyone could react, he snatched the silver handgun I had just dropped.
He rolled to his feet and aimed the weapon directly at the private investigators.
The elegant man cursed loudly, reaching into his jacket for a backup weapon.
Julian fired a warning shot into the ceiling, the deafening blast echoing wildly through the empty warehouse.
He screamed that he was not going to spend the rest of his life in a federal prison.
He admitted that he was the one who framed my late father for embezzlement five years ago.
My heart completely shattered as I realized my family's entire financial ruin was his fault.
Julian turned the gun away from the investigators and pointed the barrel right at my chest.
He snarled that I had always been a loose end that he should have cut years ago.
The elegant woman aggressively tackled Julian from the side just as he squeezed the trigger.
The gun fired a second time, a bright flash of orange light illuminating the dark room.
Julian crashed into a stack of wooden pallets, completely knocked unconscious by the fierce impact.
The warehouse went dead silent once again as the ringing in my ears slowly faded.

I tried to take a deep breath, but a sudden, burning agony ripped through my stomach.
I looked down and realized the front of my white shirt was rapidly turning a dark, sickening crimson.
