Chapter 2 - The Dirty Money

I slammed the binder shut and grabbed Julian by his expensive silk tie.
I demanded to know why my innocent sister was in a surveillance file hidden in his restaurant.
Julian stumbled backward, completely losing his usual arrogant, bossy demeanor.
He confessed that the restaurant was actually a front for a massive money laundering operation.
He had been skimming off the top of the cartel's profits for the last three years.
The four hundred dollar bill from last night was not a dine-and-dash situation.
It was exactly the amount Julian had stolen on his very first unauthorized transaction.
The couple had left that exact bill to prove they knew everything about his theft.
I felt a sickening wave of absolute panic wash over my entire body.
I realized I had paid that specific bill with my own hard-earned tip money.
Julian fell to his knees on the polished hardwood floor, begging for my help.
He said they were going to kill everyone associated with the management team.
Before I could even process his insane confession, the bell above the front door chimed.
I turned around slowly, my stomach twisting into a painful, tight knot.

The well-dressed couple from last night casually walked into the empty dining room.
The man smiled warmly and asked if they could be seated at the exact same booth.
