Chapter 8 - The Sniper's Web

The bright red laser dot rested perfectly and motionlessly over Sarah’s rapidly beating, treacherous heart. Dante froze entirely in his tracks, dropping the useless remote detonator onto the wet tarmac in pure, unadulterated shock. "I still command the absolute loyalty of the old guard, Dante," I stated with absolute, deadly confidence echoing in the night. I had secretly sent a covert, encrypted distress signal to my most loyal snipers while driving the stolen Russian SUV. Three more bright red laser dots instantly appeared precisely on the chests of Dante's top mercenary lieutenants. The armed guards holding me immediately released my arms and backed away slowly in complete, undeniable terror. I casually reached out and took my confiscated pistol right back from the nearest, violently trembling guard. "Tell your men to drop their weapons immediately, or my hidden snipers will paint this runway with your blood," I commanded fiercely. Dante gritted his teeth audibly, his dark eyes burning with immense hatred, but he slowly nodded his head in defeat. His hired mercenaries reluctantly dropped their heavy assault rifles, the metal clattering loudly and uselessly onto the wet ground. I walked over immediately and pulled the terrified Elena and Lily into a tight, fiercely protective embrace. "You have completely lost this war, Dante," I said coldly, aiming my weapon directly at my brother's forehead. Sarah suddenly let out a hysterical, desperate laugh that echoed terribly across the quiet, tense airfield. "You are incredibly naive if you think this night is over, Victor," she sneered maliciously, her eyes wild with madness. Before I could react, Sarah grabbed a hidden tactical flashbang from her coat pocket and hurled it directly at my feet. The blinding, magnesium light erupted once again, temporarily stealing my vision in the absolute most crucial moment. I fired my weapon blindly into the thick smoke, but the bullets struck nothing but the empty, raining night air. When my vision finally cleared blinking away the spots, Sarah and Dante were sprinting frantically toward the idling private jet. They dragged the massive, heavy briefcase of bearer bonds with them, desperate to escape my impending wrath. I aimed my weapon carefully, preparing to shoot out the rubber tires of the slowly moving aircraft to ground them. Suddenly, the deafening, rhythmic roar of a military helicopter’s rotors erupted from directly above the hangar roof. A heavily armored Russian attack chopper descended rapidly, kicking up a massive, blinding storm of dust and runway debris. The side door slid open aggressively, revealing a masked gunner standing behind a heavy, military-grade Gatling gun. "The Russians didn't just come to buy the little girl, Victor!" Dante yelled victoriously from the stairs of the jet. "They came to eliminate you completely and take over the entire city's underworld for themselves!"
