Chapter 5 - The Russian Debt

The sheer, unfathomable evil of Dante’s horrific plan made my blood run entirely cold in my veins. He was actually willing to trade his own flesh and blood to foreign monsters just to save his own pathetic life. I scooped Lily carefully into my arms and helped Elena stand upright on her wildly trembling legs. "We cannot stay here another minute, the fire above will eventually cook us alive in this steel box," I warned them urgently. I led them quickly to the secondary escape hatch cleverly hidden directly beneath the bunker's heavy floorboards. This narrow, forgotten tunnel connected directly to the city’s ancient, underground municipal aqueduct system. We waded miserably through knee-deep, freezing water in total darkness for nearly two agonizing miles. Elena leaned heavily against my shoulder for support, her physical strength returning slowly as the neurotoxin faded from her system. We finally emerged through a rusted, iron drainage pipe into an abandoned, overgrown industrial shipping yard. The freezing, crisp night air was an incredible, welcome relief to our burning, smoke-filled lungs. I broke the window of an old parked utility van and expertly hotwired the ignition wires in a matter of seconds. We drove anonymously out into the dark, quiet streets of Chicago, seeking refuge at my most secret, off-the-books safehouse. It was a luxurious high-rise penthouse registered entirely under a completely fake, untraceable corporate identity. We arrived at the towering apartment building, and I immediately locked the heavy, reinforced steel doors behind us. I handed Elena a soothing glass of warm water and wrapped little Lily completely in a thick, dry thermal blanket. "How did Dante successfully bypass all of my state-of-the-art security systems?" I asked Elena quietly, pacing the hardwood floor. She looked down at her shaking hands, hot tears streaming freely down her pale, exhausted face. "He did not bypass your security systems on his own, Victor," she confessed with immense, crushing guilt. "Your own wife, Sarah, gave him all the master access codes and blueprints three months ago." I stared at her in absolute, paralyzing disbelief, feeling my entire world completely shatter into pieces. My wife had claimed she was visiting her sick family in Europe for the entire summer season. Instead, she had been secretly conspiring with my dead brother to utterly destroy my entire life and legacy. Suddenly, the heavy steel front door of the penthouse began to groan loudly and warp inward. Someone was actively planting a military-grade thermite breaching charge directly on the outer titanium hinges. The door violently blew open, sending jagged metal shrapnel flying dangerously across the expensive living room. A dozen heavily armed Russian mercenaries poured aggressively into my supposedly secret, impenetrable sanctuary.
