Chapter 6 - Blood and Bullets

The ruthless Russian mercenaries flooded the penthouse, aggressively sweeping the dark room with bright green laser sights. I shoved Elena and Lily violently behind the heavy, bulletproof marble of the massive kitchen island. I drew my pistol from its holster and immediately fired three precise, deadly shots into the leading attackers. They crumpled instantly to the floor, but their heavily armored comrades quickly and aggressively returned fire. Deafening automatic gunfire completely shattered the expensive floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the glowing city skyline. I grabbed a heavy, polished frying pan and used it to beautifully reflect a mercenary's blinding laser sight back into his eyes. When the blinded man hesitated for a mere fraction of a second, I leaned out and shot him directly in his exposed throat. I knew my single, standard-issue handgun was absolutely no match for their military-grade assault rifles and body armor. I activated the penthouse's advanced automated defense system using a hidden panic button located under the granite counter. Thick titanium blast shutters slammed down aggressively over the broken windows, plunging the entire room into pitch darkness. High-frequency tactical strobe lights began flashing wildly from the ceiling, completely blinding the disoriented Russian hitmen. I moved through the chaotic, disorienting flashes of light like a deadly, silent shadow of vengeance. I used my razor-sharp combat knife to silently eliminate three more mercenaries in the absolute confusion of the strobe lights. The remaining terrified attackers panicked, firing their weapons wildly and blindly into the walls and expensive furniture. I grabbed a fallen assault rifle from a dead man and eliminated the last two hitmen with a single, controlled burst. The ruined penthouse fell into a sudden, eerie silence, smelling strongly of burnt gunpowder, shattered glass, and fresh blood. I checked on Elena and Lily behind the counter, finding them absolutely terrified but completely physically unharmed. I searched the tactical pockets of the lead Russian mercenary, looking desperately for any clue regarding their origin or destination. I found a secure, encrypted GPS device displaying an active route to a private airfield located on the city outskirts. "They were going to take Lily directly to the airfield tonight to complete the trade," I deduced grimly aloud. I knew Dante and my treacherous wife Sarah were waiting there impatiently to finalize their sickening transaction. I loaded every spare weapon and magazine I could carry into a heavy, black tactical duffel bag. I looked deeply into Elena's eyes, promising her with fierce conviction that I would end this nightmare once and for all. I led them carefully down the emergency fire stairwell to steal the dead mercenaries' armored black SUV parked outside. As we drove fiercely toward the airfield, the car radio crackled to life with a horrifying, unexpected broadcast. "I have a high-powered sniper rifle aimed precisely at your tires, Victor," Sarah's cold, familiar voice echoed through the speakers. "Pull the car over right now, or I will flip this vehicle at eighty miles an hour and kill you all."
