Chapter 3 - The Ghost in the Walls

The child's terrifying revelation hit me with the sheer force of a physical blow to the chest. Someone dangerous had been secretly living inside the walls of my own impenetrable, billion-dollar fortress. I carried Elena and Lily rapidly into the hidden steel bunker located entirely beneath my private office. I laid Elena carefully on the sterile medical cot and quickly hooked her to an automated oxygen ventilator. Her vitals were incredibly weak and erratic, but the advanced machine would keep her lungs expanding. I locked the heavy vault door, spinning the steel wheel to ensure Lily and her mother were perfectly safe. I loaded a fresh, full magazine into my pistol and turned purposefully toward the bunker's rear exit hatch. This secret exit led directly into the forgotten, Prohibition-era smuggling tunnels beneath the foundation of the estate. I turned on my heavy tactical flashlight, sweeping the blinding beam across the damp, moldy stone walls. The stale air down here was thick with dust and the distinct, unmistakable smell of expensive tobacco. It was the exact, rare brand of Italian cigars that my brother Dante used to smoke religiously. I followed the faint, lingering scent deeper into the dark, winding labyrinth of forgotten corridors. I finally discovered a small, hidden room that had been carved directly into the solid bedrock. The claustrophobic space was furnished with a simple military cot, a battery-powered lantern, and a folding desk. Pinned to the cold wall was a massive, highly detailed architectural blueprint of my entire estate. Red marker lines meticulously tracked the patrol routes and shift changes of every single one of my security guards. Someone had been studying my defenses from the inside for months, patiently waiting for the perfect moment to strike. I walked cautiously over to the wooden desk, noticing a heavy silver object resting squarely on top of it. It was Dante’s custom-engraved silver lighter, scratched and weathered, exactly as I remembered it from my youth. My dead brother had truly been living directly beneath my feet, haunting my home like a vengeful spirit. Suddenly, a heavy metal cylinder rolled rapidly across the uneven stone floor and hit the toe of my boot. I recognized the military-grade tactical flashbang grenade just a fraction of a second too late. A blinding, magnesium-white light erupted, completely stealing my vision and deafening me instantly. I fell hard to my knees, deeply disoriented by the piercing, high-pitched ringing in my eardrums. Through my heavily blurred vision, I saw a tall, broad-shouldered figure stepping smoothly out of the deep shadows. I raised my gun blindly toward the shape, but a heavy steel-toed boot kicked it easily from my trembling grasp. The man racked the slide of his assault rifle with a loud clack and aimed the barrel directly at my head. "It is incredibly good to see you again, little brother," Dante whispered coldly through the ringing silence.
