Chapter 4 - The Burning Estate

My vision slowly began to clear, finally revealing the harsh face of the brother I had mourned for over a decade. Dante looked much older now, his face scarred and deeply hardened by twelve years of living in the shadows. He kept his heavy assault rifle pointed steadily and accurately at the absolute center of my chest. "Why are you doing this, Dante?" I asked, my voice thick with a mixture of immense relief and profound betrayal. Dante laughed bitterly, the cruel sound echoing harshly off the damp, ancient stone walls of the cavern. "You stole my criminal empire, Victor, and worse, you stole the only woman I ever truly loved," he spat aggressively. He explained that Elena was originally his secret fiancée long before he was violently forced to disappear from the world. He had faked his own fiery death to escape a massive, unpayable blood debt owed to the Russian syndicate. He had left Elena behind intentionally, fully expecting me to protect her without ever touching her romantically. But I had taken her in, given her a respectable job, and treated her exactly like a member of my own family. "Lily is my biological daughter, Victor," Dante revealed with a cruel, victorious smirk spreading across his scarred face. "I snuck into her room three years ago in the dead of night, and Elena kept my secret purely out of terror." He told me he had finally returned to claim his rightful child and brutally take back his lost throne. I realized with sickening clarity that he had poisoned Elena just to force me out of my secure, fortified bedroom. "You are a heartless monster," I growled low in my throat, slowly shifting my weight stealthily onto my left foot. "I am the rightful, undisputed king of this family," Dante corrected arrogantly, his finger tightening on the trigger. I did not wait for him to make good on his deadly threat. I activated a hidden biometric switch on my watch that instantly triggered the tunnel's emergency collapse protocol. A massive, pre-planted explosive charge rocked the dirt ceiling directly above Dante's arrogant head. Tons of loose dirt and heavy stones rained down violently, creating an impenetrable, dusty wall between us. I sprinted back through the choking dust clouds toward the safety of the underground steel bunker. When I opened the heavy vault door, I found the interior of the bunker completely filled with thick, black smoke. The massive estate above us was heavily ablaze, the raging fire quickly draining our limited underground oxygen supply. Elena had finally opened her beautiful eyes, struggling weakly against the plastic mask of the medical ventilator. I rushed desperately to her side, pulling the mask away slightly so she could speak her mind. "Dante doesn't want to save Lily to be a good father," Elena choked out through a violent, agonizing coughing fit. "He wants to sell our innocent daughter to the Russian syndicate to finally clear his massive financial debt."
