Chapter 4 - The Wine Cellar

Charles slowly stood up from the leather armchair, aiming the dark barrel of the gun directly at my chest.

"My son is a fool, but he is right about one thing," Charles said calmly.

"You are not leaving this property tonight, Claire."

I held my phone light steady, refusing to let him see how badly my hands were shaking.

Maya stepped slightly in front of me, shielding my body with her own.

"You don't have to do this, Charles," Maya pleaded softly.

"The police are going to find out about the fraud, and you will spend the rest of your life in prison."

Charles let out a harsh, bitter laugh that echoed off the stone walls.

"Prison is a luxury resort compared to what will happen to this family if we do not pay our debts," he replied.

He slowly walked toward us, his expensive leather shoes crunching against the gravel floor of the cellar.

"We owe millions of dollars to the Valerius Syndicate, and the deadline for repayment is exactly midnight."

I stared at him in complete shock, finally understanding the true depth of their desperation.

They didn't just want my condo to live in; they needed my assets to save their own lives from a ruthless criminal cartel.

"Adrian's brother didn't die in a tragic car accident," Maya whispered to me, tears finally spilling down her cheeks.

"The syndicate murdered him as a warning because Charles failed to pay the interest."

Before Charles could force us to our knees, a loud, mechanical grinding noise echoed from the steel door behind us.

Sparks began flying violently through the crack in the heavy doorframe.

Adrian and Miller were using an industrial power saw to cut directly through the steel deadbolt.

"Step away from the door, both of you," Charles ordered, motioning with his pistol.

We slowly backed up, moving deeper into the maze of towering wooden wine racks.

The steel deadbolt finally snapped with a loud, metallic crack.

The heavy cellar door was kicked open, and Adrian rushed inside with Miller right behind him.

"Did you secure them?" Adrian asked his father, breathing heavily.

But before Charles could answer, a completely different voice echoed from the top of the stone staircase.

"Drop your weapons, all of you," a deep, heavily accented voice commanded.

Five men wearing black tactical gear and combat masks walked down the stairs, carrying automatic rifles.

They completely ignored Adrian and Charles, fanning out to secure the perimeter of the cellar.

A tall, elegant man in a tailored gray suit descended the stairs last.

He looked around the room with absolute disgust before his cold eyes locked entirely onto me.

"Hello, Claire," the syndicate leader said with a terrifying smile. "I have been looking for you for a very long time."
