Chapter 2 - The Corrupt Badge

The room erupted into absolute chaos as the relatives finally realized what was truly happening.
Adrian took a step backward, bumping heavily into the long dining table.
"That is a complete forgery," Adrian stammered while pointing a shaking finger at the documents.
I stared at the paperwork, realizing my husband had planned to murder me long before I ever refused to give up my condo.
"Arrest him," I told the taller officer.
"He assaulted me, and he has been spying on my entire life."
The taller officer walked slowly toward Adrian, placing a heavy hand on my husband's shoulder.
But instead of pulling out his handcuffs, the officer simply sighed and looked at his partner.
"Put the binder down, rookie," the taller officer commanded.
The younger officer looked incredibly confused.
"Sir, this is evidence of a massive felony conspiracy," the young cop argued.
The older officer suddenly drew his service weapon and pointed it directly at his young partner's chest.
"I said, put the binder down," he repeated in a dangerously low voice.
Eleanor let out a long sigh of relief and straightened her expensive pearl necklace.
"Thank goodness you were the one on duty tonight, Officer Miller," she said with a cruel smile.
I looked at the older cop and instantly recognized his face from an old high school yearbook I had seen in Adrian's study.
Miller was Adrian's childhood best friend, and he was clearly on the family's secret payroll.
"You are going to help them cover this up," I realized with a sickening drop in my stomach.
Miller kept his gun aimed at his partner while he used his free hand to retrieve the leather binder.
"Adrian was just defending himself against his hysterical, violent wife," Miller said coldly.
"When she lunged at him, she tripped, hit her head, and tragically bled to death before the ambulance could arrive."
Adrian’s face twisted into a sick, triumphant grin.
"It is a shame about the accident, Claire," Adrian whispered.
Maya suddenly reached into the pocket of her dress and pulled out a small black remote control.
"It will be very hard to explain an accident when the entire incident is currently on the internet," Maya said loudly.
Miller snapped his attention toward her.
"What are you talking about?" the corrupt cop demanded.
"I installed hidden nanny cameras in this dining room yesterday," Maya revealed.
She pressed a button on the remote, and a small green light blinked on the chandelier above us.

"Everything that just happened was live-streamed directly to my divorce attorney's private server."
Miller's eyes widened with sheer panic, and he slowly turned his service weapon away from his partner and aimed it directly at Maya's head.
