Chapter 1 - The Secret Vault

The flashing red and blue lights illuminated the horrified faces of my husband's family.
Two police officers burst through the heavy front doors with their hands resting on their holsters.
"Who called 911?" the taller officer demanded as his eyes swept across the dining room.
I kept my bloodstained linen napkin pressed tightly against my aching temple.
"I did," I answered with absolute clarity.
Adrian immediately rushed toward the officers with his hands raised in a gesture of surrender.
"Officers, please excuse this massive misunderstanding," my husband said with a charming smile.
"My wife had too much wine and accidentally tripped into the china cabinet."
Eleanor quickly stood up and nodded in agreement.
"She is terribly clumsy, and we were just about to take her to the hospital," my mother-in-law lied smoothly.
The taller officer looked at the broken plate on the floor and then looked at my bleeding face.
Before he could say another word, Maya stepped out from the shadows of the hallway.
"Do not listen to a single word they are saying," Maya said, her voice shaking but full of defiance.
Charles glared at his daughter-in-law and stepped forward to intimidate her.
"The police need to check the basement right now," Maya insisted while ignoring Charles entirely.
Adrian’s charming facade instantly crumbled into absolute panic.
"There is nothing in the basement," Adrian practically shouted.
The shorter officer unclipped his flashlight and looked directly at Maya.
"Show me," the officer ordered.
Maya led the officer down the narrow wooden stairs while Adrian and his parents exchanged terrified glances.
The remaining officer ordered everyone else to stay exactly where they were in the dining room.
Five agonizing minutes passed in total silence.
Then, we heard the heavy sound of a metal door being forced open from below.
The shorter officer slowly walked back up the stairs, holding a thick leather binder in his hands.
His face was completely pale as he looked directly at me.
"Ma'am, is your legal name Claire Elizabeth Sterling?" he asked quietly.
"Yes," I replied.
The officer opened the binder and revealed a massive stack of legal documents.
"There is a fully equipped surveillance room down there with live feeds of your condo, your office, and your car."
A collective gasp echoed from the few relatives who were not in on the family secret.
"And," the officer continued, "I just found a newly signed life insurance policy on you."
May you like
He turned the binder around so I could see the bold black ink on the bottom line.
"It is a policy for ten million dollars, and it goes into effect at midnight tonight."
