Chapter 10 - The Survivor

I stood silently over Adrian’s stretcher, holding the jagged piece of broken dinner plate between my fingers.
"You did not want a future with me, Adrian," I said, my voice carrying absolutely no emotion.
"You wanted a bank account, a victim, and a scapegoat."
Adrian sobbed harder, begging for my forgiveness as the paramedics loaded him into the back of the waiting ambulance.
I simply dropped the bloody porcelain shard onto his chest and turned my back on him forever.
The authorities spent the next several months unraveling the massive, complex web of the family's criminal conspiracy.
Charles and Eleanor were sentenced to decades in federal prison for fraud, extortion, and attempted murder.
Adrian accepted a massive plea deal, trading his youth for a small, concrete cell in a maximum-security facility.
The syndicate was completely dismantled by the FBI, their assets frozen and their leaders locked away for life.
Through the incredible legal help of Maya’s divorce attorney, I successfully retained absolute ownership of my beautiful condo and every single penny in my bank accounts.
Maya and I formed an unbreakable bond, starting a new chapter of our lives completely free from the toxic control of the men who tried to break us.
We spent the holidays drinking expensive wine on my balcony, watching the beautiful San Francisco skyline sparkle in the cool night air.
The nightmare was finally, truly over, and I had reclaimed complete control of my own destiny.
The following morning, I was happily cleaning the dust out of my master bedroom closet, preparing to donate my old clothes.
I reached up to the highest shelf and felt my hand brush against a small, strangely heavy wooden box hidden in the back corner.
I pulled the box down and carefully opened the rusted metal latch.
Inside was a pristine, brand-new porcelain dinner plate, completely identical to the one Adrian had smashed into my head.
A burner phone sitting on top of the plate suddenly began to ring, vibrating violently against the ceramic.

I answered the call with trembling hands, holding the cold plastic to my ear.
"Adrian was just the middleman, Claire," a distorted, mechanical voice whispered. "We still need that authorization."
