Chapter 8 - The Poisoned Apple

The air inside the office suddenly smelled sickeningly sweet, like crushed almonds and strong bleach.
My vision immediately began to blur as the powerful sedative flooded my lungs.
I dropped to my knees and pressed my face against the small gap beneath the heavy door.
I desperately tried to pull clean oxygen from the hallway, but my limbs were already growing incredibly heavy.
Victoria's voice continued to taunt me mercilessly over the crackling intercom.
She explained their master plan was to stage a tragic murder-suicide between Emily and me at the clinic.
They were going to frame me for corporate espionage and claim Emily caught me in the act.
I violently bit down on my own lip, using the sharp pain to keep my fading mind conscious.
The electronic lock on the door suddenly buzzed green, and the heavy wood swung open.
Daniel stepped into the smoky room wearing a pristine white tuxedo.
He wore a custom gas mask over his face and carried a massive surgical syringe filled with clear liquid.
He knelt gracefully beside my paralyzed body and gently stroked my hair.
He whispered that it truly broke his heart because he actually enjoyed my company.
Daniel raised the needle and aimed it directly at the prominent vein in my neck.
I allowed my eyes to roll completely back into my head, heavily faking total unconsciousness.
As he carelessly leaned his weight forward to inject me, I suddenly opened my eyes.

I violently thrust the heavy metal safe dial I had palmed earlier directly into his unprotected throat.
Daniel gagged loudly and dropped the lethal syringe onto the floor.
