Chapter 3 - The Trust Fund Secret

I did not hesitate for a single second.

I grabbed a heavy terracotta pot from the wooden shelf and hurled it directly at the flashlight.

The pot shattered against his hand, causing him to drop the light and curse loudly in the darkness.

I shoved the gardener toward the back exit and sprinted blindly through the maze of hanging plants.

A gunshot deafened me as a bullet shattered the glass panels right above my head.

I burst through the rear door and ran entirely on adrenaline into the thick woods surrounding the estate.

It took me two exhausting hours to hike safely back to where I had hidden my car.

I locked the doors and sped away, my heart hammering violently against my ribs.

When I finally reached my secure apartment, I immediately pulled up the property blueprints for the Mercer estate.

I cross-referenced the hidden floor safe the gardener mentioned with offshore financial records I pulled from my agency database.

The truth I uncovered was absolutely staggering.

Emily was the sole beneficiary of her late grandfather's billion-dollar tech empire.

Victoria, Richard, and Daniel had formed a corrupt medical proxy to siphon the massive funds.

They just needed Emily to be declared permanently incompetent by a state judge next week.

I furiously downloaded every single transaction to my encrypted cloud server.

Suddenly, a heavy knock echoed loudly on my apartment door.

I glanced at the digital clock on my wall, which read three in the morning.

I quietly crept to the door and looked through the small glass peephole.

Daniel was standing in the hallway, covered in mud, holding a beautiful bouquet of red roses.

He looked directly into the peephole and smiled.

He politely asked if I was going to invite my future husband inside.
