Chapter 5 - The Locked Ward

I dropped the roses and immediately deployed the pepper spray I had kept hidden in my palm.
Daniel screamed in pure agony as the chemical burning temporarily blinded him.
I scrambled over the armchair and sprinted straight out of the open apartment door.
I ran down six flights of stairs and jumped into my car, locking the doors just as Daniel stumbled into the lobby.
I drove frantically to my colleague Maya's house on the other side of the city.
Maya let me in and we spent the rest of the night analyzing the stolen financial data.
We discovered a horrifying medical transfer order scheduled for that exact morning.
The Mercers were moving Emily to the Silver Pines Psychiatric Institute for a permanent corrective procedure.
Maya told me Silver Pines was a highly secure private facility completely owned by a Mercer shell company.
We forged a set of official medical inspector badges using our agency's advanced equipment.
By eight in the morning, I was walking confidently through the sterile white halls of the psychiatric ward.
The heavy steel doors locked ominously behind me as I entered the high-security wing.
I found Emily's private room and swiped my forged keycard to get inside.
Emily was strapped heavily to a metal bed, looking extremely pale and heavily sedated.
I quickly began unbuckling the thick leather straps binding her thin wrists.
Emily weakly opened her eyes and begged me to leave before the doctor arrived.
She said the lead surgeon was completely loyal to her wicked family.
The door behind me suddenly hissed open.
A tall man in a white coat stepped into the room holding a large medical syringe.

I turned around and gasped loudly when I recognized the doctor's face.
It was Maya's husband, Greg.
