Chapter 4 - The Midnight Visitor

I quickly hid my laptop under the sofa and unlocked the deadbolt with trembling hands.

Daniel pushed his way inside before I could even open the door fully.

He handed me the roses and apologized for coming over so incredibly late.

He lied flawlessly, claiming a burglar had broken into their estate and he just wanted to make sure I was safe.

I forced a sleepy smile and told him I had been in bed for hours.

Daniel casually walked into my kitchen and poured himself a glass of water.

He kept his back to me as he asked why I was wearing full makeup and dark clothes in the middle of the night.

My mind raced desperately to find a believable excuse.

I told him I had just woken up from a nightmare and was about to go for a drive to clear my head.

Daniel turned around and stared at me with cold, dead eyes.

He slowly walked toward the living room and sat heavily on my sofa.

My heart stopped when I heard the distinct sound of my laptop fan whirring beneath the cushions.

Daniel leaned forward and reached his hand down toward the hidden computer.

He pulled it out and stared blankly at the glowing screen.

The screen clearly displayed the massive offshore bank transfers I had just discovered.

Daniel did not yell or act surprised.

He simply reached into his muddy coat pocket and pulled out a thick plastic zip-tie.

He calmly stated that it was a real shame I could not just be a good, obedient wife.

Then he lunged aggressively across the coffee table directly at my throat.
