Chapter 8 - The Hidden Truth

Thick dust heavily showered down onto our heads as the angry mercenary violently kicked at the locked trapdoor.

The old heavy wood splintered loudly, but the reinforced steel deadbolt miraculously held firm against the brutal assault.

I quickly knelt in the cold dirt and carefully examined the rusty combination padlock on the steel wall safe.

My father had once secretly told me that the combination was always my mother's real, uncelebrated anniversary date.

I spun the cold metal dial to October fourteenth and gratefully felt the heavy internal mechanism click smoothly into place.

The thick steel door swung open silently, revealing a pristine leather-bound notebook and a small digital hard drive.

I shoved the priceless items deep into my jacket pocket just as a incredibly loud gunshot blew a massive hole through the trapdoor.

"Smoke them out right now!" a gruff, angry voice yelled loudly from the laundry room directly above us.

I knew with absolute certainty we only had seconds before they mercilessly tossed a lethal tear gas grenade down the narrow stairs.

I pushed hard against a false wooden wall panel in the back of the cellar, an emergency escape route my dad built years ago.

The rotting panel easily gave way, leading directly out to a muddy drainage pipe that emptied safely into the nearby dense woods.

"Go, Arthur, move quickly!" I urged frantically, physically helping the older man crawl into the disgustingly narrow tunnel.

We scrambled desperately through the wet darkness just as a toxic gas canister hissed violently in the cellar right behind us.

We emerged coughing in the thick, thorny brush behind my mother's property, completely soaked and covered in foul mud.

Loud police sirens wailed sharply in the distance, rapidly growing louder and more intense by the passing second.

Colonel Hayes had successfully tracked my phone's military GPS signal and brought heavily armed military police to the scene.

The panicked mercenaries scattered quickly into the dark woods, entirely abandoning their black van as the flashing red lights rapidly approached.

I breathed a massive sigh of relief, foolishly thinking the absolute worst of this nightmare was finally over.

Then my muddy phone rang loudly in my pocket, ominously displaying Evan's name on the cracked caller ID.
