Chapter 1 - The Hospital Confrontation

The lockdown at Fort Briar finally lifted just as the sun began to rise over the wet Kentucky landscape.

I drove straight to Mason Ridge Medical Center without even bothering to change out of my damp military uniform.

My heavy boots echoed loudly against the sterile linoleum floors of the cardiac wing as I rushed down the hall.

Arthur was waiting patiently in the visitor area, holding a crumpled paper cup of stale hospital coffee.

He stood up slowly and gave me a reassuring nod, telling me my mother was resting comfortably after the procedure.

I hugged the exhausted old postman, whispering my endless gratitude for his quick and decisive actions.

Just as I turned toward my mother's room to see her for myself, the main elevator doors pinged open.

Evan walked out, looking completely unbothered and impeccably dressed in a crisp designer suit.

He was not alone.

The woman from the video call was clinging tightly to his arm, casually sipping an expensive iced latte.

I felt my blood run ice-cold as they approached me with matching, arrogant smirks on their faces.

"What are you doing here, Evan?" I demanded, keeping my voice dangerously low to avoid waking the nearby patients.

He sighed dramatically, pulling a thick manila folder from his polished leather briefcase.

"I am here to take control of Margaret's medical decisions, Clara," he said in a smooth, practiced tone.

I stared at him in absolute disbelief, wondering how he could possibly think he had any legal right to be here.

That was when the strange woman stepped forward and smiled directly into my eyes.

She was wearing my grandmother's priceless diamond pendant, the very same one my mother kept locked securely in her bedroom drawer.
