Chapter 3 - The Fabricated Threat

The recorded voice sounded exactly like me, though I knew with absolute certainty I had never spoken those horrific words.
Evan had clearly used advanced AI software to splice together harmless pieces of our past daily conversations.
"If you do not sign the house over to me, I will send this directly to your commanding officer," Evan sneered.
The mistress chuckled, leaning against the cold hospital wall as if this were a highly entertaining movie.
I kept my posture rigidly straight, refusing to let them see the panic that was rapidly rising in my chest.
Twenty-two years of strict military discipline kicked in, slowing my breathing and instantly sharpening my focus.
"Blackmail is a federal offense, Evan, and you are playing a very dangerous game," I stated calmly.
He laughed out loud, drawing the confused attention of a passing night-shift nurse.
"It is only blackmail if you can actually prove it, Clara," he replied with a smug, untouchable grin.
He violently shoved a metal pen toward my chest, demanding I sign the medical release forms right that second.
Arthur suddenly stepped out of the waiting area, his wrinkled hands clenched into tight fists at his sides.
"Leave her alone right now before I call hospital security," the brave elderly postman warned.
Evan scoffed loudly and took a threatening step toward Arthur, aggressively puffing out his chest to intimidate the older man.
Before Evan could do anything incredibly stupid, the sound of heavy combat boots echoed loudly from the stairwell.
Colonel Hayes, my tough and respected commanding officer, marched into the corridor in full military dress uniform.
He locked his intense eyes with Evan, his weathered face twisted into an expression of absolute fury.

"Major Carter," the Colonel said, handing me a massive stack of stamped banking documents.
"We need to talk about the half-million dollar debt your husband just secretly transferred into your name."
