Chapter 4 - The Financial Ruin

My hands trembled slightly as I took the heavy stack of banking documents from Colonel Hayes.
The crisp white pages detailed a massive business loan taken out using my military credentials and security clearance as collateral.
Evan had flawlessly forged my signature yesterday afternoon while I was completely trapped on base during the lockdown.
He had used the stolen money to immediately purchase a luxury penthouse condo under a fake corporate shell company.
"I ran a standard security check on your dependents after you unexpectedly missed morning formation," the Colonel explained quietly.
"The federal fraud department flagged this suspicious transaction at exactly 7:18 p.m. last night."
That was the exact same time Evan had been buying expensive steaks and wine for his mistress at the Riverton Chophouse.
Evan's smug demeanor vanished in a split second, rapidly replaced by a pale look of genuine, shivering terror.
He grabbed the mistress violently by the arm and started backing frantically toward the elevator doors.
"This is all just a huge misunderstanding," Evan stammered, frantically smashing his thumb against the down button.
Colonel Hayes casually crossed his strong arms, physically blocking their easiest path to the exit stairwell.
I looked closely at the woman, realizing her name was explicitly listed as the primary resident of the newly purchased condo.
"Her real name is Chloe Vance, and she is a wanted fugitive in three states for felony wire fraud," the Colonel revealed coldly.
Chloe's dark eyes widened in sheer panic as she forcefully yanked her arm out of Evan's tightening grip.
The elevator doors finally slid open behind them, revealing two fully armed and uniformed city police officers.

Just as the cops stepped forward to intervene, my phone suddenly buzzed with an urgent text message from Mrs. Nolan.
The message contained a terrifyingly blurry photo of a masked man forcefully kicking down my mother's wooden back door.
