Chapter 9 - The Hostage Bargain

Marcus stepped into the cramped, messy apartment, completely ignoring the desperate, muffled screams of my tied-up parents in the closet.
He aimed his heavy assault rifle directly at Kyle, who instantly panicked and grabbed me, using my body as a human shield.
"The FBI just raided my casino because of your little digital dossier, Claire," Marcus growled, his eyes burning with pure, murderous rage.
He had miraculously managed to escape the federal raid and had tracked my phone's GPS directly to this pathetic apartment to exact his revenge.
"If you shoot us, Marcus, you will never get the two hundred thousand dollars this family owes you," Kyle screamed frantically from behind me.
Kyle was desperately trying to negotiate with a ruthless monster, wildly waving his handgun toward the computer screen.
"I have all of Claire's money in this untraceable crypto wallet, and I will gladly transfer your cut if you let me walk away," Kyle bargained cowardly.
Marcus lowered his rifle slightly, clearly intrigued by the immediate prospect of recovering his stolen cash before fleeing the country.
I realized with absolute, horrifying clarity that both of these men were perfectly willing to murder me for a payout.
I needed to act incredibly fast, utilizing the chaotic, tense standoff to manipulate the entire situation in my favor.
"Marcus, if you kill Kyle right now, I will transfer my entire three-hundred-and-fifty-thousand-dollar balance directly to you," I offered loudly.
Kyle pressed his gun harder into my spine, completely terrified that Marcus would actually take my highly lucrative counteroffer.
"Do not listen to her, she is a manipulative corporate liar!" Kyle yelled, his hands shaking violently with sheer panic.
While they argued over the exact price of my life, I discreetly initiated a highly secure, hidden protocol on my smartwatch.
It was an emergency panic signal directly linked to the covert tactical detective squad waiting silently in the parking lot outside.
"I don't negotiate with dead men, Kyle," Marcus stated coldly, abruptly raising his assault rifle back to his shoulder.
The deafening sound of a massive stun-grenade suddenly shattered the front window of the apartment, filling the room with blinding white light.
The explosive shockwave knocked Kyle completely off balance, forcing him to drop his handgun onto the messy carpet.
I threw my body aggressively onto the floor, covering my ears as heavily armed SWAT officers poured rapidly into the tiny room.
Red laser sights instantly covered both Marcus and Kyle, completely neutralizing the deadly standoff in a matter of violent seconds.

The tired detective walked calmly through the shattered door, stepping directly over Marcus's dropped rifle.
"I told you to wait for backup, Claire," the detective sighed, pulling the terrified Kyle up from the floor by his shirt collar.
