Chapter 8 - The Ultimatum

"Step away from the closet very slowly, Claire," Kyle whispered maliciously into my ear.
I raised my hands in the air, dropping the heavy desk lamp onto the carpet as I slowly backed away from my bound parents.
Kyle stepped into the light, holding a sleek black handgun and smiling with pure, unadulterated sociopathic glee.
"You really thought you were the smartest person in this pathetic family, didn't you?" Kyle laughed mockingly.
He aggressively shoved me back into the computer chair, pointing the loaded weapon directly at my trembling chest.
"Cancel the reverse-breach protocol right now, or I will put a bullet in your mother's arrogant head," he ordered coldly.
I looked at my mother, who was sobbing hysterically through the thick silver tape covering her mouth.
Despite everything they had done to maliciously destroy my life, I could not sit there and watch someone murder them.
I placed my hands on the keyboard and reluctantly hit the escape key, completely terminating the money recovery process.
"Where is Megan?" I asked firmly, desperately trying to keep him talking to buy time for the police to arrive outside.
Kyle rolled his eyes in sheer annoyance, casually waving the loaded gun toward the open living room window.
"Megan is locked in the trunk of my car, because she was far too stupid to realize I was using her to get to your money," he admitted proudly.
He explained his master plan to murder all of us in this crappy apartment and disappear to a country without an extradition treaty.
He was going to easily frame Marcus and the underground loan syndicate for the brutal family massacre.
"You are a coward, Kyle, and the FBI already has your entire digital footprint," I bluffed confidently, staring directly into his crazy eyes.
Kyle laughed violently, pressing the cold barrel of the gun directly against my forehead to assert his dominance.
"The FBI is currently raiding Marcus's casino based on the lovely email you sent them this morning," Kyle countered brilliantly.
He had entirely anticipated my revenge against the loan shark and was perfectly using it as a massive distraction for his escape.
He ordered me to open the final firewall on the crypto wallet so he could permanently secure the stolen funds.
I slowly reached toward the computer mouse, pretending to cry in absolute defeat to lower his hyper-vigilant guard.
As my finger hovered over the final transfer button, the front door of the apartment was violently kicked entirely off its hinges.

A massive, terrifying man in a tailored suit stepped through the splintered wood, holding a customized assault rifle.
It was Marcus, the ruthless syndicate boss, and he looked incredibly angry to be interrupted.
