Chapter 1 - The Christmas Betrayal

The smell of cinnamon and roasted turkey usually brought me peace, but tonight it tasted like ash.

I stood completely frozen outside the dining room, gripping the edges of the warm pumpkin pie dish.

Through the crack in the swinging door, I could clearly hear my mother's mocking laughter echoing through the room.

"Claire won't mind moving into an apartment," my mother, Evelyn, whispered with a smug chuckle.

"Her three-hundred-and-fifty-thousand-dollar condo belongs to Megan’s family now, completely rent-free," she continued confidently.

My father grunted in full agreement, wiping his mouth with a linen napkin.

"Claire has always been the sensible child, and we gave her life, so she owes it to this family," he stated firmly.

Megan actually squealed with delight, loudly clinking her wine glass with her unemployed husband, Kyle.

"I already posted on Facebook that we are moving into luxury high-rise living!" Megan announced gleefully.

Every single drop of warmth rapidly drained from my blood as I listened to their horrible conversation.

I had sacrificed my entire twenties to build financial security as a corporate financial analyst in downtown Denver.

I worked sixty-hour weeks, brown-bagging my lunch and skipping every vacation just to pay off my mortgage.

Now, my own parents were treating my hard-earned home like communal property to gift their irresponsible golden child.

I did not burst through the door in a rage, and I absolutely did not scream at them.

Instead, I took a very deep breath and pasted a polite, bright smile across my face.

I walked casually into the room, set the pie on the table, and wished everyone a Merry Christmas.

While they toasted to Megan's bright new future behind my back, I quietly slipped into the guest bathroom.

I locked the heavy wooden door and pulled out my smartphone with trembling fingers.

I opened an encrypted text thread to my commercial real estate broker to initiate my ultimate revenge.

"Accept the institutional investor's all-cash buyout for the Cherry Creek condo immediately," I typed.

I hit send, feeling a cold, calculating sense of absolute power wash over my mind.

My phone buzzed almost instantly with an urgent reply from my broker.

"The buyer accepted the terms and is wiring the funds tonight," the message read.

"However, they demand you vacate the premises in exactly three weeks without telling anyone," he added.

I smiled darkly at my reflection in the mirror, knowing three weeks was the exact timeline my family had planned for their hostile takeover.

I opened the bathroom door to rejoin the party, feeling completely untouchable and ready to play their sick game.

My confident smirk vanished instantly when I looked down the dimly lit hallway.

Megan's husband, Kyle, was standing directly outside the bathroom door, staring intently at the glowing screen of my unlocked phone.
