Chapter 6 - The Interrogation

The cold, heavy steel handcuffs dug painfully into my wrists as the federal agents marched me through the crowded airport terminal.

I held my head high, refusing to let the staring passengers see the absolute, terrifying panic consuming my mind.

They shoved me into the back of an unmarked black SUV and drove me directly to the federal building in downtown Denver.

I was aggressively placed into a freezing, windowless interrogation room that smelled strongly of stale coffee and bleach.

A sharp-featured detective with incredibly tired eyes walked into the room, throwing a massive manila folder onto the metal table.

"You really thought you could steal three hundred and fifty thousand dollars from your own family and just fly to the Maldives?" the detective asked sarcastically.

I stared at him in utter confusion, completely bewildered by his ridiculous, backwards accusation.

"My family stole my identity and forged documents to take out illegal loans against my property," I stated clearly and firmly.

The detective laughed loudly, opening the thick folder to reveal dozens of official banking statements and printed emails.

"Your father came to us this morning with undeniable proof that you hacked into his retirement accounts," the detective countered aggressively.

He slid a document across the table that supposedly proved I had funneled my condo sale money through my parents' accounts to launder it.

My brilliant, toxic family had perfectly framed me for their own massive financial crimes to save themselves.

They had used Kyle's shady technological skills to forge a digital paper trail making me look like the criminal mastermind.

I took a deep breath, relying completely on my decade of rigorous training as a senior financial analyst.

"Detective, if you look at the metadata on those bank transfers, you will see they were executed from an IP address in Kyle's apartment," I explained calmly.

I practically begged him to let me access my secure, cloud-based server to show him my meticulously kept offshore backups.

The detective hesitated for a moment, clearly surprised by my complete lack of emotional hysteria and my hyper-logical defense.

He finally agreed, bringing a secure government laptop into the room and watching closely as I typed in my complex passwords.

I pulled up the raw, encrypted transaction logs that irrefutably proved my parents had forged the initial collateral loan documents.

The detective's arrogant demeanor instantly vanished as he realized he had just aggressively arrested the actual victim.

"We will need to immediately dispatch a team to arrest your parents and brother-in-law for identity theft and fraud," the detective admitted quietly.

I felt a massive wave of absolute relief wash over my exhausted, trembling body as the heavy handcuffs were finally unlocked.

"However, I do have some extremely bad news regarding the money from your condo sale," the detective added, looking directly at his screen.

"The three hundred and fifty thousand dollars was just completely drained from your offshore account ten minutes ago."
