Chapter 3 - The Secret Debt

I collapsed into my desk chair, my hands shaking violently as I flipped through the horrifying forged documents.

My parents had somehow managed to falsify my digital signature to secure a two-hundred-thousand-dollar line of credit.

They had essentially stolen the equity right out from under me to fund Megan's lavish, unemployed lifestyle.

I pulled up my credit monitoring application on my laptop, praying this was just some kind of elaborate misunderstanding.

The screen flashed bright red, confirming the massive, devastating debt was permanently attached to my personal identity.

If I fled to the Maldives now, the bank would inevitably discover the fraud and issue a federal warrant for my arrest.

I aggressively wiped away a frustrated tear, refusing to let my toxic family destroy the brilliant future I had built.

I needed to clear this fraudulent debt immediately before the institutional investor fully registered the new deed with the city.

I picked up my phone and dialed the contact number listed on the shady loan documents, demanding to speak to a manager.

A man with a gruff, intimidating voice answered the phone, identifying himself only as Marcus.

"You owe us a lot of money, Claire, and we were just about to come looking for you," Marcus growled threateningly.

I realized with a sinking horror that my parents had not borrowed this money from a legitimate, federally regulated bank.

They had gone to a ruthless, dangerous underground syndicate that specialized in predatory lending for desperate gamblers.

"I have the cash to pay off the entire balance in full right now," I stated firmly, trying to mask the absolute terror in my voice.

Marcus laughed darkly, a chilling sound that made the hairs on the back of my neck stand up straight.

"We do not accept wire transfers from little girls playing financial analyst," Marcus replied coldly.

"You will bring the two hundred thousand dollars in untraceable cash to the abandoned warehouse on 4th Street tonight," he commanded.

I agreed to his terrifying terms, knowing I had absolutely no other choice if I wanted to survive this nightmare.

I spent the next three hours liquidating my emergency crypto wallets and visiting multiple banks to gather the physical cash.

I packed the massive stacks of hundred-dollar bills into a heavy black duffel bag and drove to the desolate industrial district.

The warehouse was pitch black, smelling of damp concrete and rotting wood as I nervously stepped through the broken door.

Marcus stepped out of the shadows, flanked by two incredibly massive, heavily armed men in dark suits.

I threw the heavy duffel bag directly at his feet, demanding that he hand over the original loan documents and clear my name.

Marcus unzipped the bag, verifying the staggering amount of cash with a slow, sinister smile.

He handed me the forged contracts, tipping his hat to me in a mocking, theatrical gesture of respect.

"It is always a pleasure doing business with you, Claire," Marcus said, turning to walk away into the darkness.

I breathed a massive sigh of relief, clutching the damning documents tightly to my chest as I turned to leave.

Suddenly, the heavy metal doors of the warehouse slammed shut, entirely locking me inside the dark building.

"Unfortunately for you, your father called me an hour ago and took out another loan using your name," Marcus whispered from the shadows.
