Chapter 1 - The Breaking Point

Sarah cried until her entire body shook.
I sat across from her in the quiet restaurant and simply let her weep.
For years, I had watched my son Mark slowly chip away at her bright, vibrant spirit.
I had foolishly convinced myself that they were just going through a rough patch in their marriage.
But seeing her completely shatter over a simple plate of food made me realize how terribly wrong I had been.
She finally wiped her eyes with a cloth napkin and took a shaky breath.
I reached across the table and held her trembling hands firmly in mine.
I promised her that I would support her completely if she chose to take the administrative job at my company.
Sarah looked at me with a mixture of desperate hope and absolute sheer terror.
She whispered that she didn't even have access to money to buy proper clothes for a corporate office.
My heart sank into my stomach as the ugly reality of her situation became even clearer.
Mark had completely isolated her, stripping away her financial independence while she raised his five children.
I pulled my checkbook from my designer purse and wrote a check with enough zeroes to completely change her month.
I told her this was not a loan, but her first signing bonus for finally choosing herself.
A beautiful, genuine smile briefly touched her lips for the first time in five long years.
We spent the rest of the afternoon buying her a professional wardrobe and setting up a private bank account in her name only.
When I finally drove her back to her chaotic house, she looked like a completely different woman.
She stepped out of my car standing tall, wearing a tailored blazer and a fierce look of newfound determination.
I watched her walk proudly up her driveway, feeling a deep sense of pride swell in my chest.
I pulled out my phone to check my messages before putting my car into drive.
There were fourteen missed calls and six angry voicemails from Mark.
I tapped the screen and listened to the most recent recording.
His voice was dripping with absolute venom and rage.
He angrily demanded to know why his dinner wasn't perfectly cooked and waiting for him on the stove.
But it was his final sentence that made my blood run entirely cold.
Mark laughed a cruel, mocking laugh and declared that he was officially teaching Sarah a lesson tonight.

He proudly announced that he had just secretly locked all the exterior doors and disabled her house keys.
My pregnant daughter-in-law was currently standing on the dark porch, completely locked out in the freezing rain while her five children cried inside.
