Chapter 3 - The Hidden Truth

Clara felt all the air leave her lungs as the horrific realization washed over her.
The tragic car accident that killed Arthur’s first wife was actually a calculated, cold-blooded murder.
Vanessa had orchestrated the entire tragedy just to slide into the role of the grieving billionaire's new bride.
Clara knew they were no longer dealing with a cruel socialite, but a ruthless and seasoned killer.
She pulled her standard-issue employee cell phone from her apron pocket to dial for emergency help.
The digital screen displayed a stark warning that there was absolutely no cellular service available.
Vanessa had apparently activated the mansion’s emergency signal jammers to isolate them from the outside world.
Clara held Ethan’s hand tightly and peeked out into the dimly lit servant corridor.
“We need to get to your father’s private study,” Clara whispered to the frightened child.
Arthur’s office contained a secure, hardwired emergency telephone line that could bypass the jamming frequencies.
They crept silently through the hidden passages, avoiding the main halls where heavy combat boots were already echoing.
Clara finally located the secret panel that opened directly behind the massive bookshelves in Arthur’s study.
She pressed the hidden latch, and the heavy wooden shelf swung open with a quiet creak.
The opulent office was completely dark, illuminated only by the moonlight filtering through the large bay windows.
Clara rushed to the heavy mahogany desk and grabbed the red emergency telephone receiver.
She held it to her ear, but her heart sank when she heard absolutely nothing but dead silence.
Someone had physically severed the thick telephone cables from the wall outside the room.
As Clara set the useless phone down, she noticed a thick manila folder resting squarely in the center of Arthur's desk.
The bold letters printed across the top of the confidential file made her breath catch in her throat.
The file was labeled with Clara’s full legal name, her social security number, and her true date of birth.
She opened the cover, her eyes scanning the highly classified documents hidden inside.
Arthur had secretly ordered a massive private investigation into her past before she was even hired as a maid.
But the most shocking document was a DNA test confirming that Clara was actually the biological sister of Ethan’s murdered mother.

Before Clara could even process the explosive revelation, the heavy oak doors of the study burst open.
Vanessa strolled into the room, pressing the barrel of a silver handgun directly against Arthur’s bleeding head.
