Chapter 1 - The Siege of Harbor Cove

Clara leaned her entire body weight against the heavy oak door, her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird. She clamped a hand over her mouth to muffle her jagged breathing.
Outside, the heavy, rhythmic thud of Dominic’s fist against the wood echoed through her small, peaceful cottage.
"Clara! Open the door!" Dominic’s voice was a low, dangerous rumble that vibrated through the floorboards. "You can't hide him from me. I saw his eyes. He is my son!"
In the living room, four-year-old Leo dropped his toy truck. His steel-gray eyes—a perfect, haunting mirror of the billionaire pounding on their door—were wide with confusion. "Mommy? Who is the angry man?"
"Just a stranger, baby," Clara choked out, forcing a reassuring smile. "Go to your room. Hide under the bed like we practiced."
As Leo scrambled down the hallway, the sound of tires crunching on gravel shattered the morning mist. Clara peeked through the curtain. Three sleek, tinted SUVs had completely blocked her driveway. Men in tailored black suits and tactical earpieces stepped out, forming a perimeter around her house.
"Dominic, please," Clara yelled through the door, tears spilling hot down her cheeks. "Leave us alone! Haven't you taken enough from me?"
"I never took anything, Clara! You vanished!"
Suddenly, the front door splintered. Dominic didn't kick it down; his head of security picked the lock with terrifying efficiency. The door swung open, and Dominic Thorne stood in her foyer. He looked older. Harsher. The expensive tailored suit couldn't hide the raw, unhinged desperation in his eyes.
"Get out," Clara backed away, grabbing a heavy brass candlestick from the console table.
Dominic didn't even flinch. He looked at her, his gaze dropping to the framed photos on the mantel. Photos of Clara and Leo. "Four years," he whispered, his voice cracking with a vulnerability she had never heard from the ruthless CEO. "I spent millions looking for you. Why did you run?"
"Because I walked into your private office!" Clara screamed, her grief finally exploding. "I went to surprise you with the ultrasound! And I found you on the leather sofa with Vanessa. With my own cousin, Dominic! So don't you dare play the victim!"

Dominic froze. The anger evaporated from his face, replaced by absolute, chilling confusion.
"Clara," he said slowly, stepping forward. "On the day you disappeared, I wasn't in Manhattan. I was in Tokyo closing the Vanguard merger."
