Chapter 9 - The Final Standoff

Mark’s fingers tightened painfully around my throat, cutting off my air supply.
I clawed desperately at his arm, but he was far too strong and fueled by sheer panic.
"Drop your weapon, Marchetti, or I blow this entire dock into the ocean," Mark screamed into the rain.
Damian slowly lowered his gun, his dark eyes locked on mine with a promise of violent retribution.
"You press that button, and you die right alongside us," Damian said, his voice terrifyingly calm.
"I don't care anymore," Mark spat, dragging me closer to the edge of the swaying boat.
I realized in that terrible moment that Mark genuinely intended to kill us all to escape Silvio's wrath.
I stopped fighting his grip and went completely limp, catching him entirely off guard.
As his hold loosened for a fraction of a second, I drove my elbow brutally hard into his ribs.
Mark gasped in pain and stumbled backward, dropping the detonator onto the wet deck.
Damian moved faster than lightning, leaping onto the boat and driving his shoulder into Mark's chest.
Both men crashed violently into the steering console, shattering the glass instruments into pieces.
I scrambled across the slippery deck and kicked the detonator straight into the dark ocean water.
Mark pulled a hidden knife from his boot and slashed wildly at Damian's face.
Damian dodged the lethal blade and delivered a punishing strike to Mark's jaw, knocking him completely unconscious.
I collapsed onto the deck, gasping for air as the heavy rain washed the blood from the boat.
Damian immediately rushed to my side, wrapping his strong arms around my trembling body.
"It's over," he whispered against my wet hair, holding me tighter than he ever had.
"They can never hurt you or our children ever again."
Sirens suddenly wailed in the distance, signaling that Damian's loyal reinforcements had finally arrived to clean up the mess.

I looked over toward the shipping containers where the nannies were bringing the triplets out into the open.
The little girl saw me and instantly reached her tiny hands out, completely oblivious to the danger that had just passed.
