Chapter 6 - The Siege

The heavy recoil of the pistol sent me stumbling backward into the closet door.

When I opened my eyes, the traitorous guard was groaning on the floor, clutching his bleeding shoulder.

I didn't have time to hesitate or think about what I had just done.

I kicked his dropped rifle across the room and kept my pistol aimed squarely at his chest.

Damian rushed back into the room a second later, his clothes covered in plaster and dust from the firefight.

He looked at the bleeding guard on the floor and then up at me, a flash of genuine respect in his dark eyes.

"They breached the southern gate," Damian yelled over the blaring sirens. "We need to leave the estate now."

I grabbed the children's stroller and began buckling them in with frantic, trembling fingers.

Damian dragged the wounded guard out of the doorway and cleared the path into the smoky hallway.

We rushed down the back stairs, moving as fast as we could while avoiding the main lobby.

The sound of shattering glass and rapid gunfire echoed from the front of the massive house.

"My brother wants me dead so he can take over the entire syndicate," Damian explained as we ran.

"He used Mark to steal your children, knowing I was desperate for an heir, effectively tying my hands."

We reached the basement level, where Damian punched a code into a hidden panel on the stone wall.

A heavy steel door hissed open, revealing a dark, damp underground tunnel.

I pushed the stroller inside just as a massive explosion shook the foundation of the house.

Dust and debris rained down on us as Damian quickly sealed the heavy steel door behind us.

The sudden silence in the tunnel was almost as deafening as the gunfire had been.

We walked for what felt like miles in the dark, guided only by the small flashlight on Damian's phone.

"We are heading to a secure safehouse by the docks," Damian whispered.

But as we finally reached the exit hatch, Damian froze and shined his light on the dirt floor.

Fresh muddy footprints led directly toward the metal ladder, meaning someone had beaten us here.
