Chapter 5 - The Nursery Ambush

The sound of Mark’s voice made all the blood completely drain from my face.

He was the man who had walked out on me the moment I told him I was pregnant with triplets.

"Mark?" I gasped out loud, unable to stop the word from escaping my trembling lips.

A dark, cruel chuckle echoed through the phone speaker.

"Hello, Chloe," Mark mocked. "I see you finally found out about my little side hustle at the hospital."

Damian gripped the phone so hard his knuckles turned completely white.

"If you ever come near this house, I will personally bury you in the desert," Damian threatened with lethal calm.

"You can't bury me if your own guards are working for me," Mark laughed before the line went completely dead.

Damian dropped the phone and immediately grabbed my arm, pulling me away from the large glass windows.

"We are totally compromised," Damian stated, pulling a secondary weapon from his ankle holster.

He handed the heavy pistol to me, forcing me to wrap my shaking fingers around the grip.

"You shoot anyone who comes through that door who isn't me," he commanded.

Before I could even process the weight of the gun, the mansion's emergency alarms began to blare.

Red lights flashed wildly in the hallway as the sounds of shouting and heavy gunfire echoed from the first floor.

I frantically gathered Leo, Luca, and Lily, pushing them safely into the reinforced closet at the back of the room.

Damian stepped out into the hallway to secure the corridor, leaving me alone in the nursery to guard the door.

My heart pounded furiously against my ribs as heavy footsteps approached the room.

The doorknob rattled violently before someone kicked the heavy wood with tremendous force.

The door splintered open, revealing one of Damian's own bodyguards pointing a rifle directly at me.

"Nothing personal, lady, but the boss's brother pays much better," the traitor sneered, stepping into the room.

May you like

He raised the rifle, aiming it right at my chest.

I closed my eyes and pulled the trigger of the pistol Damian had given me, praying for a miracle.
