Chapter 1 - The Alleyway Echoes

The freezing rain soaked right through my thin diner uniform as I stood paralyzed in the dark alleyway.
I could still feel the phantom warmth of the little girl's trembling hand reaching for me.
She had looked right into my soul as if she had known me her entire life.
Her tiny voice calling me mother shattered the fragile, lonely reality I had built over the last fourteen months.
Damian Marchetti stood before me, completely ignoring the downpour that was currently ruining his expensive tailored suit.
He held the toddler against his broad chest with a surprising gentleness for a man known to run the city's underworld.
Behind him, his four massive bodyguards kept a tight perimeter, their eyes scanning the dark street for any threats.
"You have precisely three seconds to explain why my daughter thinks you are her mother," Damian said softly.
His voice was a low, dangerous rumble that carried perfectly over the loud sound of the storm.
I wrapped my arms around myself, shivering violently from the cold and the sheer shock of the moment.
"I told you inside that I honestly don't know," I cried out, my voice breaking.
"My babies died at the hospital fourteen months ago during an emergency delivery."
Damian took a slow step closer, his dark eyes searching my face for any sign of a lie or deception.
He looked down at the little girl, then back at me, clearly noting the identical hazel eyes we shared.
"I adopted these children eight months ago from a highly exclusive, private broker," he stated flatly.
He reached into his suit pocket and pulled out a small, tarnished silver rattle.
"They came with absolutely nothing but a thin hospital blanket and this."
My heart completely stopped in my chest as I recognized the object.
That was the exact silver rattle my grandmother had custom engraved for me right before I went into labor.
Before I could even reach out to touch it, a deafening screech of tires echoed down the narrow alley.
A heavy black SUV swerved around the corner, its bright headlights blinding us in the absolute dark.
The rear windows rolled down in unison to reveal the cold steel of automatic weapons pointing directly at us.

Damian lunged forward without hesitation, shoving me and the little girl hard behind the solid brick wall of the diner.
Gunfire erupted into the night, tearing the bricks apart just inches from my head.
