Chapter 9 - The Last Stand

The grinding noise of the drill echoed terribly through the cavernous foyer.
They were cutting straight through the reinforced security doors.
Adrian forced himself to stand up, leaning heavily against my shoulder.
"There is a secondary lockdown protocol," Adrian gasped, gritting his teeth in pain.
"Where?" I asked, supporting his weight.
"The control panel is hidden behind the fireplace mantle," he said.
We limped over to the massive stone fireplace together.
Adrian pressed a hidden sequence of stones, and a small metal panel popped open.
Inside was a single red lever.
"Pull it," he ordered.
I grabbed the cold metal lever and pulled it down with all my strength.
Instantly, a loud mechanical groaning shook the entire foundation of the house.
Thick titanium blast doors slammed down over every single window and exterior door in the estate.
The deafening sound of the drill was completely cut off.

The entire house was instantly sealed like an impenetrable vault.
We were entirely safe from the attackers outside.
