Chapter 5 - The Blue Lips

Someone had intentionally tried to kill Adrian Cross tonight.
His phone had no signal at all.
The private roads leading to the estate were buried under six feet of snow.
Emergency services were absolutely not getting through.
I touched his burning forehead, then sprinted to my room to grab the professional medical kit I had quietly kept hidden since the day I arrived.
I returned to the living room and immediately went to work.
I stripped off his frozen, soaked coat and wrapped him in thick wool blankets.
For the first time since Adrian Cross had looked at me and decided I was completely useless, his life depended entirely on me.
I administered a broad-spectrum antibiotic from my kit, praying it would fight whatever infection was raging in his wounded shoulder.
I started a saline IV drip using the brass chandelier hook to hang the fluid bag.
I sat beside him for hours, monitoring his shallow breathing as the storm raged violently outside.
Finally, just before dawn, his gray eyes fluttered open.
He looked completely disoriented.
Then he reached out and grabbed my wrist with shocking, terrifying strength.
He pulled me down closer to his face.
May you like
"Elena?" he whispered, his voice cracking with desperate emotion.
Before I could correct him, the sound of glass shattering echoed from the kitchen down the hall.
