Chapter 10 - The False Dawn

Silence returned to the living room, heavy and absolute.

The warm glow of the dying fire illuminated the dusty air.

Adrian leaned back against the leather sofa, exhaling a long, shaky breath of relief.

"They can't get through those blast doors with anything less than military-grade explosives," he explained.

I felt a massive wave of exhaustion finally hit my body.

We had actually survived the night.

Adrian looked at me, his cold eyes completely softened by genuine gratitude.

"I was wrong about you," he said quietly, reaching out to gently touch my hand.

He pulled me slightly closer, a silent apology resting in the space between us.

I smiled, finally feeling a sense of peace in this terrifying house.

Adrian reached over to my open medical kit on the floor, intending to grab a fresh bandage for his shoulder.

His hand dug beneath a layer of white surgical gauze.

He pulled out a small, heavy black device with a blinking red light and a taped wire.

It was the exact remote detonator used to blow up the steel awning.

Adrian's grateful expression instantly turned to absolute, freezing ice.

Before I could even process how the device had gotten into my bag, Adrian raised the pistol and pressed the cold barrel directly against my forehead.
