Chapter 8 - The Siege

I let go of the transmission button immediately, my heart hammering in my chest.

I did not say a single word.

"Hello? Anyone there?" the traitor's voice echoed through the dark study.

I turned the radio off completely, severing the connection.

They were already on the grounds, and they were hunting us.

I sprinted back downstairs to the living room as fast as I could.

I grabbed the heavy oak dining chairs and started wedging them tightly under the living room door handles.

I pushed a massive bookshelf in front of the hallway entrance.

Vance watched me with wide, confused eyes.

"What are you doing?" Vance asked weakly.

"The rescue team is fake," I told him, grabbing more heavy furniture.

Suddenly, Adrian stirred on the floor, groaning in pain.

He pushed himself up onto one elbow, his gray eyes finally clear of the feverish haze.

He took in the barricades, his bleeding house manager, and me holding his gun.

"You saved me," Adrian said softly, sounding genuinely shocked.

"I promised you I could handle this house," I replied evenly.

Adrian actually smiled, a genuine expression that entirely changed his harsh face.

But our brief moment of connection was violently interrupted.

The terrifying screech of a heavy industrial drill began tearing through the steel hinges of the front door.
