Chapter 6 - The Breach

Adrian immediately lost consciousness again, his grip on my wrist going slack.

I dropped to the floor, terrified that the intruders had finally breached the house.

I crawled behind the massive leather sofa, dragging my medical kit with me.

I held my breath, listening intently to the sounds in the dark hallway.

Heavy, wet footsteps moved slowly across the hardwood floor.

Whoever it was, they were bleeding, because I could hear wet drops hitting the ground.

I reached into Adrian's discarded coat and pulled out his heavy pistol.

My hands shook violently, but my nursing instincts strangely kept my mind razor-sharp.

The footsteps stopped right at the entrance of the living room.

A tall figure leaned heavily against the doorframe, gasping for air.

It was Vance, the stoic house manager.

He was clutching his side, his white shirt completely soaked in dark blood.

"They're inside," Vance choked out, sliding slowly down the wall.

I rushed over to him, keeping the gun aimed at the dark hallway just in case he was being followed.

I quickly pressed a thick gauze pad against his gunshot wound.

"Who is inside?" I demanded, applying heavy pressure to stop the bleeding.

Vance looked at me, his eyes wide with absolute panic.

"The associate from the dinner party," Vance whispered.
