Chapter 8 - The Deposition

Two months later, we met in a sterile, glass-walled conference room at Sarah’s law firm for the civil deposition.
David and Eleanor sat across the table, looking incredibly smug. They had hired a sleazy, aggressive defense attorney who clearly believed their victim narrative.
"My clients have endured severe trauma," the opposing lawyer began. "We are prepared to countersue for defamation, assault, and false imprisonment unless you drop the divorce demands and offer a settlement."
Sarah didn't even blink. She opened her briefcase and pulled out a thick stack of transcripts and a flash drive.
"Before we discuss settlements," Sarah said smoothly, "I’d like to depose David. David, under oath, did you ever threaten your wife with physical violence?"
"No," David lied flawlessly. "Never."
"Did your mother ever instruct you to seize your wife's bank accounts and physically discipline her?"
"Absolutely not," Eleanor chimed in, glaring at me. "That is a vile lie."
Sarah smiled. She connected the flash drive to the monitor on the wall. "Let’s review Exhibit A."
The audio of David confessing on the kitchen floor played loudly. Then, the video of Eleanor sitting at my dining table, bragging about training her son to hit me and control my money, echoed through the room.
The opposing attorney went completely pale. He looked at David, then at Eleanor, realizing they had lied to him.
"Now," Sarah continued, pulling up the financial spreadsheets. "Let's review Exhibit B. The wire fraud. The hidden debt. The conspiracy to transfer the deed of my client's home to Eleanor’s offshore trust."

Eleanor began to hyperventilate. David stared at the table, completely broken.
"You perjured yourselves ten seconds into this deposition," Sarah said coldly. "We aren't settling. We are taking you to trial, and we are going to bankrupt whatever is left of your pathetic lives."
