Chapter 5 - The Legal Ambush

Two uniformed officers and a detective burst through the door, followed closely by my attorney, Sarah. She looked like a shark smelling blood in the water.
"Officers, that woman assaulted my son and held him hostage!" Eleanor shrieked, pointing a trembling finger at me. "Arrest her!"
The detective looked at David on the floor, then at me. "Ma'am, is this true?"
Sarah stepped forward, handing an iPad to the detective. "My client acted in pure self-defense after her husband threatened her life and attempted a physical assault. We have the audio of the threat, the video of the husband's confession to the attempted assault, and video of this woman—Eleanor—confessing to conspiracy to commit domestic violence and financial fraud."
The detective watched the clip of my lunch with Eleanor, his eyebrows raising higher with every word she spoke. He looked down at David. "Did you attempt to strike your wife last night, son?"
"I... I was just trying to scare her!" David sobbed. "My mom told me to!"
"Officer, cut these ties off him!" Eleanor demanded, trying to maintain her authority.
"We will," the detective said coldly. "Right before we put him in handcuffs. David, you are under arrest for attempted assault and domestic violence. Eleanor, we’d like you to come down to the station to answer some questions regarding conspiracy and coercion."

Watching David get perp-walked out of my house in his wrinkled pajamas was deeply satisfying, but watching Eleanor being escorted into the back of a squad car, her pristine reputation shattered in front of all my nosy neighbors, was absolute poetry.
Sarah stayed behind as the police left. She poured herself a glass of water and smirked. "Well, Maya. That was the most efficient divorce prep I've ever seen. But we aren't done. The police have the assault handled. Now, we go after the money."
