Chapter 6 - Uncovering the Financial Fraud

With David sitting in a holding cell and Eleanor frantically trying to secure bail, Sarah and I went to work.
I hired a forensic accountant to dig into David’s finances, giving them access to the data I had pulled from his phone. What we found over the next forty-eight hours made the physical threats seem almost secondary.
David and Eleanor were entirely broke.
Eleanor had been living a lie for a decade. She had secretly remortgaged her home, drained her husband’s retirement accounts, and accumulated hundreds of thousands of dollars in hidden debt to fund her lavish lifestyle and country club memberships. David was entirely complicit, having taken out massive personal loans to keep up the appearance of wealth.
I wasn't a bride to them; I was a bailout.
They had targeted me specifically because I was a successful, independent woman with zero debt, a high credit score, and an owned property. The plan was to isolate me, break my spirit through physical and emotional abuse, force me to sign over my assets, and use my credit to pay off Eleanor’s crushing debts.
"This is organized crime," Sarah said, reviewing the spreadsheets in my living room. "This isn't just a bad marriage, Maya. This is a coordinated financial conspiracy. We're not just filing for divorce; we're filing a civil suit for fraud, intentional infliction of emotional distress, and conspiracy."

I felt a cold rage settle into my bones. "I want everything. I want them ruined."
"Oh, we will ruin them," Sarah grinned. "But first, they’re going to try to ruin you."
