Chapter 5 - The Medical File

I pushed Maya behind a stack of moving boxes to hide her from the intruder.
I gripped the heavy metal wrench tightly and pressed myself flat against the cold concrete wall.
The man in the suit reached the bottom of the stairs and scanned the empty chair.
He cursed loudly and pulled the suppressed pistol from his shoulder holster.
As he stepped forward into the dim light I swung the wrench with everything I had.
The heavy iron struck his wrist and the gun clattered loudly onto the cement floor.
Before he could react I drove my knee directly into his stomach.
The man folded over in pain and I hit him squarely in the jaw with the handle of the wrench.
He collapsed onto the floor completely unconscious and bleeding from his mouth.
I stood over him panting heavily and completely shocked by my own brutal reflexes.
I moved with a fluid combat precision that I did not know I possessed.
I grabbed the dropped pistol from the floor and checked the loaded magazine.
The cold metal felt incredibly natural and familiar in my shaking hands.
I called Maya out from the shadows and told her to stay directly behind me.
We crept silently up the basement stairs and stepped into the dark kitchen.
The house was eerily quiet and there was no sign of Caroline or Lily anywhere.
I noticed that the door to Caroline's home office was slightly ajar.
I pushed the door open and saw that the room had been completely ransacked.
Drawers were pulled out and papers were scattered violently across the hardwood floor.
Behind a shifted bookshelf I spotted a large wall safe that was hanging wide open.
I walked over to the safe and pulled out a thick stack of hidden documents.
There were three completely forged passports inside the metal box.
One was for Caroline and the other two were for Lily and Maya.
At the very bottom of the safe I found a thick medical file with my face on the cover.
I flipped the folder open and began reading the highly classified psychological reports.
The documents detailed a severe traumatic brain injury I suffered exactly five years ago.
The file stated that my amnesia was intentionally induced using experimental chemical treatments.
According to the official paperwork Caroline was not a loving wife.
She was a highly trained handler assigned to monitor my suppressed memories.

A soft click behind me made me freeze in my tracks.
I turned around slowly and found Caroline pointing a shotgun directly at my chest.
