Chapter 1 - The Missing Food

It all started with the missing food.
I thought I was just forgetting how much I had eaten.
A slice of bread would vanish from the kitchen counter.
A shiny red apple would disappear from the fruit bowl overnight.
Small bottles of water were quietly taken from the refrigerator.
I blamed my own absentmindedness after long days at the office.
But the disappearances became far too frequent to ignore.
I decided to stay up late and listen for any strange noises.
The house was completely silent except for the hum of the air conditioner.
Then I heard the soft padding of small footsteps in the hallway.
I crept out of my bedroom and followed the sound into the dark.
I found my four-year-old daughter Lily standing in the corner of her room.
She was carrying a handful of crackers and a plastic bottle of water.
She was carefully pushing the items toward a loose air vent near the baseboard.
I knelt down beside her and gently touched her shoulder.
I asked her softly who she was feeding in the middle of the night.
Lily did not look at me and instead pointed directly toward the plaster wall.
That was the exact moment I heard another child breathing behind it.
My heart hammered in my chest as I grabbed the metal vent cover.
I pulled the grate loose with a sharp tug and peered into the dark crawlspace.
A frightened little girl with tangled brown hair was hiding inside the dusty hollow.
She looked to be about six years old and was wearing a filthy oversized t-shirt.
I was completely paralyzed by the impossible sight of a child living in my walls.
Then the bedroom door creaked open and my wife Caroline walked into the room.
Her reaction to this terrifying discovery completely chilled me to the bone.
She did not gasp or scream or ask who the child was.
Caroline already knew the little girl was hiding inside our house.
She grabbed my arm with a desperate grip and told me not to ask the girl anything.
Before I could demand a logical explanation the dirty child crawled closer to the opening.
The little girl looked directly into my eyes with a heartbreaking sense of familiarity.
She reached her tiny hand out through the vent and touched my fingers.
Then she opened her cracked lips and called me Daddy.
I stumbled backward and stared at my wife in sheer horror.
Caroline frantically claimed she was confused and had no idea what was happening.
But she was visibly shaking and her eyes were darting toward the hallway.
The little girl reached into her dirty pocket and pulled out a crumpled piece of paper.
She handed it to me through the dark opening of the wall.
I unfolded the paper and realized it was an old photograph.
The picture showed me standing on a beach holding this exact little girl as an infant.
I had never seen this photograph before in my entire life.

Then Lily tugged on my pajama pants and whispered something absolutely terrifying.
She told me that Mommy brings someone here at night when I am asleep.
