Chapter 4 - The Stolen Past

I woke up with a splitting headache and the bitter taste of copper in my mouth.
My vision was completely blurred as I tried to lift my heavy head.
I realized very quickly that my hands and ankles were tightly bound with thick zip ties.
I was sitting in a hard wooden chair in the damp basement of my own home.
A single bare lightbulb swung from the ceiling casting long terrifying shadows.
I struggled fiercely against the plastic restraints but they dug painfully into my skin.
I heard the heavy basement door creak open at the top of the wooden stairs.
A pair of soft footsteps slowly descended into the damp cellar.
I expected to see the tall man in the dark suit holding the weapon.
Instead the little girl from the walls stepped into the dim light.
She was holding a pair of heavy garden shears she had taken from the tool bench.
She rushed over to my chair and began snipping desperately at the thick plastic ties.
I whispered my thanks and asked her what her real name was.
She looked up at me with her massive brown eyes and said her name was Maya.
I rubbed my raw wrists and asked Maya where Caroline and Lily were.
Maya told me that the bad man was upstairs talking to Caroline in the kitchen.
I stood up slowly and grabbed a heavy metal wrench from the nearby workbench.
I knew I had to protect these children and get them out of this nightmare.
Before I moved toward the stairs I asked Maya how she got the photograph of me.
Maya looked down at her dirty shoes and completely shattered my reality.
She told me that I gave her the picture before the bad men took me away from her.
I knelt down and told her I did not remember ever having another daughter.
Maya reached out and touched my cheek with her small trembling hand.
She whispered that my memory was erased because I used to be a dangerous person.
She then dropped a terrifying truth bomb that left me entirely speechless.
Maya told me that Caroline was not actually Lily's real mother either.
She said Caroline was just a guard hired to make sure I never remembered who I truly was.

Heavy boots suddenly began stomping violently down the wooden basement stairs.
The man in the dark suit had finally realized I was no longer tied to the chair.
