Chapter 7 - THE GUARDIAN ANGEL

"Stop!" Leo screamed, running past the police tape. "You can't do this! It's freezing out here, they have nowhere to go!"

A burly building inspector held his hand up. "Back off, kid. This building is condemned. It's city property, and they are trespassing. They gotta go."

Leo looked at Marcus’s smug face, feeling completely powerless. He had a job now, but he didn't have the money to house twenty people. The system was crushing them.

Then, a sleek black Mercedes pulled up to the police barricade.

Margaret Hale stepped out, wearing a sharp cashmere coat and holding a leather briefcase. She didn't look at Leo; she walked straight up to the police captain and the building inspector.

"Excuse me," Margaret said, her voice cutting through the chaos like a diamond. "Why are you evicting my tenants?"

The inspector frowned. "Your tenants, lady? This building belongs to the city."

"Not anymore," Margaret said calmly. She opened her briefcase and handed the inspector a thick stack of notarized documents. "I bought the property at a private city auction an hour ago. Paid in full. The deed is in my name. These people are my permitted, legal guests while I renovate the building into a subsidized housing unit."

The inspector looked at the papers. They were ironclad. He sighed, turning to the officers. "Stand down, boys. It's private property now."

Leo stared at Margaret in absolute shock. Across the street, Marcus dropped his cigarette, his jaw clenched in pure, unadulterated rage.
