Chapter 1 - THE RECKONING

Margaret stood in the freezing rain, peering through the cracked glass of the boiler room window. Her heart hammered against her ribs. For months, she had looked at Leo Vance and seen only a quiet, disposable employee. She had believed the lies of a corrupt, arrogant Sous Chef. But looking at the elderly woman feeding a sick child with the food Leo had painstakingly salvaged, the truth hit Margaret with the force of a freight train.

She didn't knock on the door. She didn’t want to humiliate him further.

Instead, Margaret turned on her heel, marched back to her Mercedes, and drove straight back to The Azure Room. She didn't sleep. She sat in her dark, luxurious office until 5:00 AM, waiting.

At exactly 5:15 AM, Marcus Thorne walked through the back door. He didn't turn on the main lights. He went straight for the walk-in freezer, carrying two empty duffel bags.

When Marcus turned around, clutching a dozen imported wagyu steaks, Margaret flipped the overhead lights on.

Marcus dropped the steaks, his face draining of color. "Margaret! You're in early."

"I saw everything, Marcus," she said, her voice dropping to a glacial chill. She tossed a USB drive onto the stainless steel prep table. "I have the security footage. The caviar. The champagne. The violent way you treat my staff. And the illegal fencing you’ve been running out of my loading dock."

"I can explain," Marcus stammered, backing toward the door. "The kid, Leo, he was the ringleader—"

"Do not say his name," Margaret hissed. "The police are already waiting in the alley. You are fired, Marcus. And you are going to prison."

The back doors swung open, and two Boston police officers stepped inside. Marcus was handcuffed and dragged out into the rain, swearing vengeance. Margaret watched him go, feeling a profound sense of clarity. The rot had been removed. Now, it was time to rebuild.
