Chapter 6 - THE EVICTION

Marcus saw the review from his dingy apartment, and he completely lost his mind. Sabotaging the restaurant hadn't worked. He needed to hit Leo where it truly hurt: the street family.

Marcus knew where Leo lived. He had followed him once, months ago.

He made an anonymous call to the Boston Department of Housing and Urban Development, reporting an illegal, hazardous squatter encampment filled with undocumented children in the abandoned clinic on 4th Street.

Two days later, Leo was prepping vegetables in the kitchen when his burner phone rang. It was one of the older teenagers from the clinic.

"Leo, you gotta come quick!" the boy panicked. "The police are here! Building enforcement too. They’re boarding up the doors and kicking everyone out onto the street! They’re taking the little kids to child services!"

Leo dropped his knife. Without a word, he bolted out the back door, sprinting down the freezing Boston streets.

When he arrived, it was a nightmare. Police cruisers blocked the road. Frightened runaway teens and elderly homeless folks were being corralled onto the sidewalk, clutching their meager belongings in garbage bags. The old woman and the toddler were crying.

Standing across the street, leaning against a brick wall and smoking a cigarette, was Marcus. He smiled a wicked, triumphant smile at Leo.
