Chapter 5 - THE REVIEW

The critic, a notoriously cynical man named Julian Vance, sat in the center booth. He ordered the tasting menu, a notorious trap designed to test a kitchen’s versatility.

Margaret stood by the swinging doors, her heart in her throat, watching the servers carry Leo’s improvised dishes to the table.

Vance tasted the wild mushroom risotto. He stopped. He closed his eyes.

He moved on to the local cod with the brown butter glaze. He set his fork down, wiped his mouth with the linen napkin, and signaled for Margaret.

"Margaret," Vance said, his voice low. "I have eaten in Paris, Tokyo, and New York this month. The food I usually get here is technically perfect, but soulless. This?" He pointed to the plate. "This has a soul. Who is cooking back there?"

Margaret smiled, tears pricking her eyes. "My new Sous Chef. His name is Leo Vance."

The next morning, the review was published on the front page of the culinary gazette. “The Azure Room has shed its pretentious skin and discovered true culinary magic. A masterpiece of rustic perfection. Five Stars.”

The restaurant was booked solid for the next six months. Leo had saved Margaret’s empire.
