Chapter 5 - The Siege

The heavy steel walls of the basement vibrated as the front gates of the estate were blown off their hinges.
I sprinted up the stairs with Marco trailing closely behind me.
I checked the security monitors in the main hall and saw three armored trucks parked on my lawn.
Dozens of heavily armed mercenaries were pouring out of the vehicles and advancing on the house.
I opened the hidden armory behind the library bookshelf and tossed Marco an automatic shotgun.
I grabbed two assault rifles and a tactical vest filled with spare magazines.
I ran back to the guest bedroom and barricaded the heavy oak door with a mahogany dresser.
I handed Emma a small pistol and told her to shoot anyone who came through the door.
She gripped the weapon with pale, trembling fingers.
I stepped out into the hallway just as the front windows of the mansion shattered inward.
The Russians breached the foyer, sweeping the darkness with blinding tactical lights.
Marco and I opened fire from the top of the grand staircase.
The marble statues and expensive paintings were violently shredded by the intense crossfire.
I dropped three mercenaries before they could even seek cover behind the velvet sofas.
Marco roared as he pumped shotgun shells into the advancing line of assassins.
The house filled with thick gray smoke and the sickening smell of gunpowder.
We fought with brutal, unrelenting efficiency to protect our home.
Suddenly, the remaining mercenaries completely stopped firing.
They slowly backed out of the shattered windows and retreated into the stormy night.
I kept my rifle raised, waiting for the secondary ambush.
The armored trucks sped away, leaving the front lawn completely silent.

Marco lowered his weapon and pointed at a small black object resting on the blood-soaked carpet.
It was a ringing cell phone.
