Chapter 10 - The False Victory

I left Marco’s lifeless body on the floor and walked slowly back to the main wing of the safehouse.

I felt a profound, chilling sense of clarity wash over my entire soul.

I had believed I was the savior in this tragic story of a broken, innocent housekeeper.

I had torn my own city apart, killed my rivals, and imprisoned my own sister to protect her.

I walked toward the guest bedroom where Emma was supposed to be resting from her injuries.

I felt completely in control of my empire once again, having eliminated the traitors and Kolov in a single night.

I believed the war was officially over and my throne was secure.

I quietly pushed open the heavy oak door of the guest room to confront her.

The room was completely empty, and the window was wide open, letting in the freezing rain.

I walked over to the desk and found her bloody maid’s uniform neatly folded next to a burner phone.

I pulled up the live security feed on my tablet to see how she had escaped the heavily guarded perimeter.

The high-definition video showed Emma walking calmly through the back alley hours before Kolov's men supposedly beat her.

She was standing in the rain, carefully applying theatrical blood and specialized makeup to her own face to mimic severe bruising.

The two men who had "attacked" her walked up, handed her a tiny, blinking earpiece, and bowed respectfully to her.

She placed the earpiece in her ear, wiped a smear of fake blood on her cheek, and smiled directly into my hidden security camera.

I zoomed in on the footage and saw a perfectly drawn snake tattoo completely wrapping around her left wrist.

She wasn't a victim of Kolov’s syndicate; she was the boss who actually commanded it.
