Chapter 7 - The Midnight Infiltration

The rain had returned by the time I parked my beat-up sedan three blocks away from my own townhouse.

I pulled the hood of my dark raincoat tightly over my head and slipped silently through the familiar neighborhood shadows.

Leaving Lily safely asleep under Chloe's watchful eye at the estate was the hardest thing I had ever done, but I had no other choice.

If I did not retrieve the SD card from the hidden camera in Marcus's office, my daughter would be handed over to a monster.

I crept through the muddy backyard and retrieved the spare emergency key hidden inside a fake hollow rock near the patio door.

The lock clicked open with a soft, metallic thud, and I slipped inside the dark, eerily quiet house I used to call home.

The air smelled strongly of Vanessa's expensive, cloying perfume, making my stomach churn with absolute disgust.

I tiptoed silently up the carpeted stairs, avoiding the third step that I knew always creaked loudly under pressure.

When I finally reached Marcus’s home office, I pulled over his heavy leather desk chair and climbed up to reach the high air vent.

My shaking fingers managed to pry the metal grate loose, and I blindly reached into the dusty darkness until I felt the small plastic camera casing.

I popped the tiny memory card out and slipped it safely into the deepest pocket of my jeans.

A massive wave of relief washed over me, knowing I finally had the undeniable video proof of his financial crimes and shady dealings.

But just as I stepped down from the chair, the bright headlights of a luxury SUV swept aggressively across the front window blinds.

The heavy front door unlocked with a loud beep, and I heard the unmistakable sound of Marcus and Vanessa walking into the downstairs foyer.

I completely froze, trapped in the second-floor office with absolutely no alternate way to escape the house.

“Brody destroyed the clinic files, so the paternity secret is completely safe forever,” Marcus said loudly as he poured a drink in the kitchen.

“But Sarah is still a massive liability, Marcus, especially since she somehow got that music director to protect her,” Vanessa replied, her voice cold and calculated.

I pressed my back tightly against the office wall, holding my breath as I listened to the people who had destroyed my life.

“The second mortgage is entirely in her name, which means she is financially responsible for the cartel money I borrowed to buy your promotion,” Marcus confessed.

My heart practically stopped beating inside my chest as the horrifying pieces of the puzzle finally slammed together.

Marcus had not borrowed money from a bank; he had taken a loan from a dangerous criminal syndicate and pinned the debt entirely on me.

“We cannot just have her institutionalized anymore, Marcus, because she will eventually talk to the authorities,” Vanessa stated with chilling calmness.

“I already paid the cartel fixers a massive bonus to cut the brake lines on her cheap sedan tonight while it is parked outside.”

I clamped my hand violently over my own mouth to stop the scream of absolute terror from escaping my throat.
