Chapter 3 - The Interrogation

The violent banging against the motel door rattled the cheap artwork hanging on the peeling walls.

Lily bolted upright in bed, clutching her teddy bear tightly against her chest as her eyes widened in pure terror.

I placed a single finger over my lips, silently begging her to stay completely quiet.

I walked slowly toward the door, my heart pounding so fiercely against my ribs that I felt physically ill.

Looking through the dirty peephole, I saw three heavily armed police officers standing on the rain-soaked walkway.

I knew that if I did not open the door, they would absolutely kick it down and traumatize Lily even further.

I turned the deadbolt with a loud click and pulled the door open just a few inches.

“Sarah Miller?” the lead officer demanded, placing his heavy boot inside the doorframe so I could not close it.

“I am Sarah, but please lower your voice because my daughter is terrified,” I replied, trying to keep my tone remarkably steady.

The officer pushed the door fully open and stepped into the small room, his hand resting cautiously on his utility belt.

“We received an urgent dispatch regarding a parental kidnapping and a child in immediate danger,” he stated coldly.

He looked past me and locked eyes with Lily, who was trembling on the edge of the mattress.

“Hi there, sweetheart, are you hurt?” the officer asked, his tone softening slightly.

Lily shook her head vigorously, wrapping her small arms around my waist as I stepped back to protect her.

“My mommy didn't kidnap me,” Lily said in a clear, brave voice that broke my heart.

“We left because my daddy said he liked Vanessa's son better than me and bought him a giant piano.”

The three officers exchanged a very uncomfortable, telling glance.

They were used to dealing with genuine criminals, not wealthy husbands using the police department to terrorize their scorned wives.

I handed the lead officer my phone, showing him the text message from Chloe confirming she was my legal counsel.

“My husband drained our accounts and filed a false report to punish me for leaving him over his infidelity,” I explained calmly.

The officer sighed heavily, recognizing the messy reality of a bitter domestic dispute.

“The court order requires you to appear before a judge on Monday morning, Mrs. Miller,” he said, stepping backward out of the room.

“We are not taking the child tonight because she is clearly safe, but you better show up to court or a real warrant will be issued.”

They left the motel, leaving me alone with the crushing reality of my impossible situation.

I had three days to prepare for a brutal legal battle against a man with unlimited resources.

The next morning, Chloe arrived at the motel with a prepaid debit card and a bag of warm groceries for Lily.

She told me the only way to fight Marcus's fabricated debt was to gather concrete evidence of his financial fraud directly from his corporate office.

I left Lily safely with Chloe at her secure law firm and drove my beat-up sedan to the towering glass skyscraper where Marcus worked.

I knew the security codes for the executive suite because I used to bring Marcus lunch every single Friday.

I slipped past the front desk during the busy lunch rush and rode the elevator up to the top floor.

My plan was to access his desktop computer and forward the offshore LLC emails to my own private account.

I pushed open the heavy glass doors of his department and walked directly toward his corner office.

But before I could even reach the handle, a perfectly manicured hand slammed against the glass right in front of my face.

I turned around and found myself staring directly into the smug, triumphant eyes of Vanessa.

“Can I help you find something, Sarah?” Vanessa asked, her voice dripping with venomous fake sweetness.

She was not wearing her usual administrative assistant uniform anymore.

She was wearing a custom designer suit, and a shiny new gold plaque on the door beside us read 'Vanessa Sterling, Vice President of Operations'.

“Security is already on their way up here to arrest you for corporate trespassing,” Vanessa whispered, leaning in close so only I could hear.
